Metal Warriors is a side-scrolling action-platformer with run-and-gun elements, set in the year 2102, where the Earth is under siege from the Dark Axis military force. Players pilot one of six distinct “Battledroid” mech suits, each with unique weapons and abilities, across nine missions to overthrow the dictator Venkar Amon. The main character is Lieutenant Stone, a pilot from the titular freedom-fighting group.
A core gameplay mechanic allows players to eject from their current mech at any time and pilot other unoccupied suits found throughout the levels, offering strategic flexibility. When outside a mech, the pilot, Stone, is vulnerable but can use a jetpack to fly and a pistol for limited defense. Levels often feature destructible environments and sometimes require players to exit their mech to navigate small passages or activate switches. Players have a limited number of continues for the entire single-player campaign.
The game also features a two-player head-to-head combat mode, providing varied matchups due to the different robot types and destructible environments. In this mode, players battle each other, utilizing the unique capabilities of each mech and collecting power-ups like rockets, grenade launchers, mine layers, and gravity inverters. The six playable mech suits are the Nitro, Havoc, Prometheus, Spider, Ballistic, and Drache, each with distinct offensive and defensive weapons and combat styles.
Metal Warriors stands out for its innovative mech-switching mechanic, which adds a strategic layer to the action-platforming gameplay. The game’s diverse mech roster and destructible environments contribute to its replayability, particularly in the competitive multiplayer mode.
