U.N. Squadron is a side-scrolling arcade shoot-’em-up developed by Capcom and released in 1989. The game is based on the manga Area 88 and follows the story of fighter pilot Shin Kazama, who is tricked into joining the military of the fictional nation of Asran. Unable to leave his service freely, Shin must either complete a three-year term, earn enough money to buy his freedom, or desert and face criminal consequences.
During a conflict against the enemy organization known as Project 4, Shin is joined by fellow pilots Mickey Simon and Greg Gates. Players can choose any of these three mercenary pilots, each flying a different aircraft with unique strengths and weapon characteristics.
- Shin Kazama flies the F-20 Tigershark, offering balanced performance and fast forward-firing weapons.
- Mickey Simon pilots the F-14 Tomcat, which delivers slower but more powerful forward attacks.
- Greg Gates commands the A-10 Thunderbolt, featuring forward fire as well as an additional downward-angled attack, making it effective against ground targets.
