Bad Ice Cream is an arcade action puzzle game where players control an ice cream character in a maze-like setting. The goal is to collect all the fruits in each level while avoiding various enemies. Players can choose from different ice cream flavors, including vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate. The game features simple, pixelated graphics and a top-down perspective, reminiscent of classic arcade titles.

A round of Bad Ice Cream involves navigating a grid-based maze to collect all the designated fruit. The current fruit type to collect is highlighted, guiding the player. Players can break existing ice blocks to clear paths or create new ice barriers to temporarily trap enemies or reshape the maze. Enemies patrol the levels, attempting to melt the ice cream character on contact. Some enemies can even break through ice barriers. Levels progress in difficulty, introducing more complex layouts, faster enemies, and interactive objects like hot tiles that melt ice or arrow tiles that change ice block direction.

The game supports both single-player and two-player cooperative modes, allowing two players to share a single keyboard. There are 40 distinct levels to complete. While there are no specific upgrades or power-ups for the ice cream characters, the ability to create and destroy ice blocks serves as the primary special ability for defense and strategic movement. The choice of ice cream flavor is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay.
