Cut the Rope 2 is a physics-based puzzle game where the main character, Om Nom, a candy-loving green monster, embarks on an adventure to retrieve his stolen candy supply. The game features Om Nom traveling through various environments like lush forests, sandy dams, junkyards, city parks, and underground tunnels, encountering new characters called Nommies along the way.

The core gameplay involves cutting ropes and manipulating environmental objects to guide a piece of candy into Om Nom's mouth. Unlike previous installments, Om Nom can now move across the screen, adding a new layer to the puzzles as players must guide both the candy and Om Nom to the same point. Levels progress by successfully feeding Om Nom, with the challenge increasing as new obstacles, interactive items, and the unique abilities of the Nommies are introduced. Players are encouraged to explore each level and are able to restart easily to try different strategies for optimal results.

The game includes over 160 levels across various locations. Players can earn up to three stars per level based on their performance, and collecting a certain number of stars is required to unlock subsequent worlds. Additionally, hidden clovers can be found in some levels, which unlock extra levels within each stage. Customization options are available for Om Nom, including different hats, and players can also choose the appearance of the candies and finger traces. Power-ups like "Candy Rain" and "Balloons" can assist players, and a "Fly Through" power-up provides step-by-step solutions for challenging levels.
